What is
Speech Therapy
Speech Language Therapy also known as Speech Therapy, helps children learn to communicate better. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)/ Speech Language Therapists (SLTs) work with kids who have trouble with talking, understanding language, or expressing their thoughts and feelings. They support children of all ages who may have speech delays, speech disorders, or language challenges. Through fun, engaging activities, SLPs help children with speech delay to develop the skills they need to express their needs, wants, and ideas.

How does
it help
Speech therapy helps children express themselves better, whether it’s talking, understanding, or socializing. Improved communication makes it easier for them to connect with friends and family, boosting their confidence and independence. Therapy also supports language development, which can help with reading, writing, and learning in school. Overall, children feel more understood and ready to interact with the world around them.

What happens during an Assessment
During a child’s speech therapy evaluation, the Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) begins by discussing the child’s medical, developmental, and communication history with parents or caregivers. After identifying specific concerns, the SLP uses a range of standardized tests to assess various aspects of communication. Common assessments may include the Photo Articulation Test (to evaluate speech sound production), the Receptive Expressive Emergent Language Scale (REELS) (to assess language age), and the Preschool Language Scales or Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals (CELF) for a comprehensive look at language understanding and expression.
For children with autism spectrum disorder, additional screenings such as the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) or the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) can be used to evaluate social communication skills and behaviours associated with autism. Observational speech therapy tools and play-based activities further help the SLP understand social communication and engagement. Based on the findings, the SLP provide a comprehensive assessment report. If other developmental needs arise, they may recommend seeing professionals like occupational therapists, audiologists, or psychologists for additional support.
An initial evaluation session typically lasts between 45 minutes to 1 hour. Our assessments are also designed to be ongoing and dynamic, allowing therapists to continuously evaluate the child’s progress and refine therapeutic goals as they gain deeper insights into the child’s needs.

When should you start Speech Therapy
It's important to consider starting speech therapy for kids if you notice any speech or developmental delays or difficulties in their communication skills. If a child is not meeting typical speech and language milestones—such as babbling by 12 months, saying simple words by 12-15 months, or forming simple sentences by age 2—it may be time to seek an evaluation. Additionally, if a child struggles with clarity in speech, understanding instructions, or engaging in conversations with peers, early intervention can significantly benefit their development. The sooner speech therapy begins, the better the outcomes, as it can help address issues before they affect social interactions and academic success.
